Taylor M. Owens Scholarship – $1500 Award

Taylor Owens was a 2019 graduate of Pike High School who earned her Certified Nursing Assistant License and was pursuing a degree as a Registered Nurse when she lost her life in a tragic car accident in July 2021. Mrs. Jodi MacDonald taught English at Pike High School, beginning her teaching career in 1992. Mrs.MacDonald was an excellent teacher. Most students lucky enough to have had Mrs. MacDonald in class ended up claiming her as their favorite teacher. She mentored countless students over her tenure at Pike and her memory lives on in each of them. Mrs. MacDonald also coached volleyball and basketball at Pike High School, positively impacting many athletes during that time. The Coach Darner Scholarship – $1998/year – renewable for 4 years – Total Award $7992

Coach Alan Darner was the head coach of the Pike Red Devil Basketball Team from 1996 – 2001. His teams went 109-37 and won three conference championships, one Marion County championship, three sectionals, two regionals, two semi-state titles and the 1998 & 2001 IHSAA 4A state championships. He was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2020 recognizing a career that also included stints at Anderson Highland High School, Malvern High School, Steubenville Catholic Central, Medina High School and Tiffin Columbian High School.
Coach Darner is remembered by his 1998 team for three very admirable qualities:

    Discipline

  • Tough love for his players; coaching his way
  • Preparation pays
    Accountability

  • Never did anything halfway- Always gave 100% to whatever he committed to
  • Demanding but would do anything for you
    Leadership

  • Intensity in everything he did
  • Instilled his passion for the game of basketball into his family, players, and everyone around him

Former Mr. Basketball Chris Thomas said, “Coach Darner had tough love for us. He wanted to win more than anybody else on the court. He knew how to take a group of talented guys and put them together with the ultimate goal of winning a state championship. He had such an important role in my life. In a day and age where everybody is so soft and you can’t say anything to a player or parent, Coach Darner did it his way. And he had to juggle a lot of egos, especially mine.”

The Ed and Carmen Siegel Scholarship – $1,000 Award

Ed and Carmen Siegel valued the importance of family. Whether it was their three children: Mark, Julie, and David, they were family-oriented—be it the Pike basketball family, the Pike faculty family, or the Pike community family. The definition of family for Ed and Carmen was all encompassing.
Carmen was a nursery schoolteacher in Pike Township at Bethel Nursery School for sixteen years. She loved teaching in a Christian-themed environment where she valued the importance of faith, music, and play nurturing young children to grow in an encouraging environment. Carmen was an active volunteer within the community and Pike schools. Her contagious personality made her a friend to all she met.
Ed began his devotion to Pike Township joining the faculty at Central Elementary in 1967. He became the Pike High School Boys Head Basketball coach in 1970 and retained that position until his retirement in 1995. During Ed’s time at Pike High School, he valued teaching Economics to all graduating seniors, where his business advice was often sought. The students loved Ed and in turn awarded him with the “Gold Brick Award” five times for his devotion to education. Ed’s basketball success of six Sectional wins and two regional wins recognized him with the “Marion County Coach of the Year” three times, and the CSAC “Coach of the Year” seven times throughout his career. However, his greatest basketball memory was coaching his sons, Mark, and David, two outstanding Pike High School athletes. Ed continued his support to community serving on the Pike School Board from 1998 through 2002.
Carmen was as much a member of the Pike Basketball teams as Ed was. You could find Carmen in the stands cheering for Pike at every game. Her home, heart, and dinner table were always open to students—both during their high school years and long after their glory days on the court or classroom had faded away. Carmen was as much a mother figure to students and players as Ed was a father figure.
Carmen and Ed were devoted to their children, Mark, Julie, and David. Along with their children, the Siegel home was always open to welcome others with love and laughter. That love and inclusion extended to the Pike faculty, students, and community where Carmen and Ed were loved in return. To know Carmen and Ed was to be a part of their family forever to share in community, love, and laughter.

Joel Leaman Memorial Scholarship – $1000 Award

Coach Leaman began teaching at Pike in 1970 in the English Department.  In 1971 he moved to the Guidance Department.  He was also the track and cross-country coach at Pike.  But really, he was a coach, mentor, and lifelong example of positivity.  He truly connected with kids and adults alike; he was upbeat, always seeing the best and the potential in everyone. Joel was cool—and he had a Corvette.  He was also a Beach Boys fan.  He loved Friday mornings in the early 1990’s when one of the principals had “Be True to Your School” piped over the PA system as the kids entered school. Joel was the personification of “Good Vibrations”.   He made others feel important. He emphasized the positive.  He made kids believe in themselves because he saw their potential when no one else did.  Former students often re-connected with Joel to tell him how much he impacted their lives. Joel retired from Pike in 2010 after 40 years, having touched thousands of Pike lives. But his influence didn’t stop there.  Joel made a difference with his life.  He endured with grace, kept up his spirits, and set a great example for everyone to learn from.   David Harkins concludes a poem with lines which embody Joel’s spirit, “You can remember him and only that he’s gone, or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.”

Maggie Harry Memorial Scholarship – $2000 Award

This scholarship is in honor of Maggie Harry, a Pike student who suffered from bipolar disorder and lost her life to this terrible disease. She left a legacy of creativity and inspiration. She was a goofball and proud of it. Anyone who knew her is filled with stories of joy and wonder. Through this scholarship, we are seeking someone who exemplifies-in his or her own way-that spirit. Students applying for this scholarship should be individuals who have improved-in large or small ways-the lives in their orbit. They should have made concentrated efforts to improve themselves and incorporate creativity into their lives. They also will show care about the world beyond their immediate surroundings. The scholarship committee is less concerned with where you are studying and more focused on how your plans will contribute to you as a person. If you have any doubt about your qualifications, please apply anyway.
We hope that is what Maggie would have done.

Gloria Jean Cobb Serving the World Scholarship – $2,000 Award

This scholarship is for a student who plans to pursue a two-year or four-year degree in a field related to public service while continuing a passion for serving the community. Dr. Gloria Jean Cobb graduated from Pike Township High School in 1958, and from Milligan College in 1962. She continued her studies, graduating from Indiana University’s School of Medicine in 1966. After completing an internship at Hurley Hospital in Flint Michigan in 1967, Dr. Cobb traveled to Zimbabwe, Africa, which was known as Rhodesia at the time, where she worked in several mission hospitals. There, she treated common parasitic diseases like malaria, common infections like tuberculosis, skin infections, including leprosy, and gastrointestinal diseases. She also performed surgical procedures that ranged from the treatment of traumatic injuries, from simple lacerations or fractures to life-saving Caesarian deliveries. In addition, she practiced preventative medicine providing immunizations at well-baby clinics. During this time, Dr. Cobb also furthered her education, receiving medical training in pediatrics and obstetrics & gynecology at Harare Central Hospital. This was followed by a ten year stint at Chidamoyo Christian Hospital. In the 1990’s Dr. Cobb assisted with church related work in Harare, and was involved in providing medical care to people with HIV-AID at a training center and hospice facility in Harare. After retiring and returning to the states, Dr. Cobb went on numerous mission trips with a group from Southport Heights Christian Church. She also worked closely with the church to provide medical care to the elderly. “Dr. Cobb has devoted her life to providing medical care to people in one of the most deprived and often dangerous parts of the world. Obviously, she could have opted for a comfortable lifestyle in the U.S., but chose to utilize her talents and skills in a totally unselfish manner for over 25 years.”
